Equine asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that occurs primarily in horses. This disease, also known as “COPD” (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or “REEF”, significantly affects the health and performance of horses! In this article, we will take a closer look at equine asthma and discuss its causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

Equine asthma often occurs in horses that live in dusty or poorly ventilated environments. Dust particles, allergens, and mold spores in the air can irritate the horses’ respiratory tract and cause inflammation in the bronchi. This causes a thickening of the mucous membrane and a narrowing of the airways, making it difficult for the affected horse to breathe. Studies have shown that up to 80% of horses suffer from mild to moderate equine asthma.

Causes of equine asthma

The main cause of equine asthma is inhalation exposure to irritating particles and allergens in the air. Horses kept in dusty stalls and on straw are at greater risk of developing this disease. The most commonly identified triggers are:

  • Dust particles in hay and straw
  • Mold, bacteria, mite droppings and yeast cultures in hay
  • Allergens such as pollen and animal hair
  • Horses that are genetically more susceptible to respiratory diseases or have a history of respiratory problems are also more susceptible to equine asthma
